Cameras in Electroplating and Surface-Treatment Shops (India)
In a plating shop, cameras earn their keep in three places: the cyanide and acid store, the tank line, and the ETP outlet. Standard housings corrode within a year over live tanks — the IP rating is tested with fresh water only and guarantees nothing against acid fumes. Budget ₹4–7 lakh for a 12-camera plating line.
You run a job-shop plating or surface-treatment unit — nickel-chrome, zinc passivation, anodising, phosphating — somewhere in Rajkot, Ludhiana, Faridabad, Coimbatore or the Pune belt. Two hundred to a thousand people. Your customers are OEMs and Tier-1s, and in the last two years they stopped accepting a signed self-declaration and started sending auditors with cameras of their own. Meanwhile the pollution board wants your effluent story to hold up, and since 21 November 2025 your safety obligations sit under a new statute. - The law you are working under changed. The Factories Act, 1948 no longer governs you. The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 came into force on 21 November 2025, replacing the Factories Act and twelve other central labour laws with a single Code. Any consultant still quoting Section 7A of the old Act to you is working from a dead book. The practical caveat: most of the detail sits in state rules made under the Code, and states are notifying those rules at different speeds — ask your own factory inspectorate which rules currently apply to you. - Your worst-case is a gas event, not a fall. Acid contacting a cyanide salt converts a stable solid into volatile hydrogen cyanide gas — 100–200 ppm HCN kills a human within 10 to 60 minutes, and about 2,000 ppm kills in roughly one minute. Roughly half of people cannot smell HCN at all, for genetic reasons. A camera cannot smell it either. What it can do is prove who carried what drum, where, and when.
- Chrome plating is a carcinogen exposure, quietly. OSHA states that hexavalent chromium is known to cause cancer and "targets the respiratory system, kidneys, liver, skin and eyes", with a US permissible limit of 5 µg/m³ as an 8-hour TWA and an action level of 2.5 µg/m³. Those are American numbers and are not enforceable in India — useful as a benchmark only. Under the OSH Code, maximum permissible exposure limits for chemical and toxic substances are to be prescribed by state government, which may also specify medical examinations for workers in hazardous processes.
- IP66 is not corrosion-proof. The IP code covers dust and water ingress only; testing uses fresh water, and protection against other fluids such as salt water, oils or solvents is not guaranteed and requires specific chemical-resistance testing. A ₹9,000 bullet camera over a chromic acid tank is a consumable, not an asset.
- Video is the cheapest audit evidence you can produce. An OEM auditor asking "show me your bund inspection was done on the 14th" is a two-minute clip. Reproducing the same answer from a paper register takes a day and gets doubted anyway.
- It cuts both ways. Footage that shows your operator dosing an untreated batch to drain at 9pm is discoverable by the board and by your customer. Install cameras only if you intend to fix what they show.
What actually goes wrong on a plating line
Rank your risks honestly before you buy hardware. In surface treatment the events that end companies are, in order: a cyanide-acid gas release in the store or at a tank; an acid splash or tank fall during manual jig loading; a chronic chrome-mist exposure nobody notices for five years; and an effluent discharge that the board traces back to you.
Only the middle two are meaningfully visible on camera. Gas and chronic exposure are instrument problems — fixed-point gas detectors, air sampling, medical surveillance. Anyone selling you AI cameras as a substitute for a gas detector in a cyanide shop is selling you a fatality.
What video does very well: enforce the procedural controls that prevent the invisible events. Nobody enters the cyanide store alone. Nobody carries an acid carboy through the cyanide bay. Nobody works over an open chrome tank without the face shield and gauntlets. Nobody bypasses the ETP dosing pump. Those are all watchable behaviours, and behaviour is where plating accidents start.
Hardware reality: the fume line eats equipment
Acid mist plus salt spray plus 40°C shop temperature is a harsher environment than anything a camera vendor's warranty was written for. Treat your shop as three zones and buy differently in each.

Three rules from the field. First, mount outside the plume wherever the shot allows — a camera 4 m away at the aisle end, on a longer lens, outlives a camera directly over the tank by years. Second, aluminium housings pit fast in acid mist; specify 316 stainless (not 304) for anything inside the tank hall. Third, run cable in conduit and land every switch, NVR and PoE injector in a positively-pressured or at minimum a separate, sealed panel room — corrosion kills switches before it kills cameras. What video actually evidences at a consent inspection
Your consent to operate under the Water and Air Acts carries conditions: run the ETP, meet outlet standards, store and dispose of plating sludge as hazardous waste, keep records. The Central Pollution Control Board and your state board enforce those conditions, and inspection is increasingly document-and-data driven.
Video will not prove your effluent quality. Only analysis does that. What video proves is continuity of operation — the boring, hard-to-fake claim that your controls were actually running:
- The ETP dosing and blower were operating during the shift, not switched on for the visit.
- The sludge drums moved from the filter press to the covered hazardous-waste store, with dates, and left on an authorised vehicle.
- No tanker or hose was connected to a storm drain, on any night, over the retention window.
- The bund and the neutralisation pit were physically intact and not overflowing.
That last point matters most. Boards and neighbours make allegations about night discharge. If your only defence is your word, you are in a weak position. If you can produce 90 days of the outlet camera showing nothing untoward, you have something concrete to put on the table. Note that no board is obliged to accept your footage as proof of anything — it is corroboration, not a certificate. The customer audit is the real driver
Most small platers we speak to did not buy cameras for the inspector. They bought them because a Tier-1 auditor put a corrective action on them and gave 60 days.
What those audits ask for, in practice: PPE compliance evidence for the tank line, chemical handling training records tied to actual observed behaviour, contractor and visitor control at the chemical store, and a traceable process record for the batch that failed at the customer's end. A shop that can pull up the jig loading of a specific lot on a specific day, and show the plating time and the operator, closes a rejection dispute quickly instead of eating the debit note.
One thing to be clear about: no automotive or quality standard we are aware of contains a clause requiring CCTV. Customer audit checklists are contractual, buyer-by-buyer. When an auditor asks for camera coverage, that is your customer's requirement, not a certification rule — so negotiate it on those terms.

The honest caveat: detection accuracy over a fume-hazed tank line is materially worse than in a clean assembly hall, and any vendor quoting you a single accuracy number without seeing your shop is guessing.
Where cameras do not help — and where they can hurt you
Read this section twice before you sign anything.
They do not detect gas, mist or exposure. No camera measures HCN, chromic acid mist or acid vapour. The IDLH level for hydrogen cyanide is 50 ppm — you need fixed detectors and alarms, not analytics. Do not let a camera budget cannibalise a gas-detection budget.
They do not fix a bad bund or a broken exhaust. Video documents the failure. Engineering removes it. If your push-pull ventilation over the chrome tank is undersized, cameras just record the same violation daily and build a written history of it.
Footage is evidence against you too. Once recorded, that clip exists. In an accident inquiry, a customer dispute, or a board proceeding, video showing a repeated unsafe practice makes the "we did not know" defence very hard to run. This is a good reason to install cameras and act on what they show — not a reason to avoid them.
Workers' privacy is now a statutory obligation. The DPDP Rules, 2025 were notified on 13 November 2025, with substantive obligations phasing in over an 18-month window to 13 May 2027, and penalties for failure of reasonable security safeguards run to ₹250 crore. You need a posted notice, a defined purpose, a retention limit, and no cameras in change rooms, washrooms or the workers' rest area — the areas where plating workers strip contaminated PPE. Union and morale cost is real. In a plating shop the workers taking the exposure are the ones being filmed. Announce it, explain the safety purpose, show them the footage of a near-miss, and it lands. Install it silently over the tank line and it reads as surveillance of piece-rate output.
A sane first phase
If your budget is one lakh, not seven: put two cameras on the chemical store door and one on the ETP outlet. That is the smallest configuration that changes your risk profile — it covers the event that can kill someone and the event that can shut you down. Add the tank line in phase two, with proper 316 SS housings, once you have seen twelve months of what the first three cameras actually show you.
FAQ
Is CCTV legally mandatory in an Indian electroplating unit? There is no blanket national rule making CCTV mandatory in plating shops, and no quality standard we are aware of contains a clause requiring it. Obligations arise indirectly — through consent conditions imposed by your state pollution control board, customer contracts and audit checklists, and in some states specific directions for particular categories of establishment. Check your own consent to operate document line by line; conditions vary by state and by board officer.
Will cameras survive over a chromic acid tank? Not in a standard housing. The IP code is tested with fresh water and does not guarantee protection against other fluids — that needs separate chemical-resistance testing. Use 316 stainless or polypropylene-clad enclosures, mount outside the plume where the shot allows, and treat front glass as a consumable. Can a camera warn me about a cyanide gas release? No. Cameras see, they do not sense gas. Hydrogen cyanide kills within 10 to 60 minutes at 100–200 ppm and requires fixed-point detectors with audible alarms. Cameras are complementary — they enforce the segregation rules and two-person entry that prevent the release in the first place.
